Welcome To D & L Arabians

As a young girl, I had dreamed of owning a Donoghue Arabian, but the dream did not materialize until 1978 when my husband and I were able to breed our two mares to Beau Ibn Hanrah and Don Fersheba.  In 1980 Mr. Donoghue began reducing his herd and invited us to his farm to choose a stallion of our own.  We chose Don Beau Pronto as our foundation stallion (Beau Ibn Hanrah x Cassa Arriba) (full sister to Cass Ole, the black stallion who played in Francis Ford Coppola’s 1979 movie The Black Stallion and the 1983 sequel The Black Stallion Returns).  Pronto became our foundation stallion.  We placed Pronto with Brad Bunio who was training in New Braunfels under the watchful eyes of Walter Chapman.  Mr. Chapman and his wife Carol trained for Mr. Donoghue for many years.  Walter is now deceased, but was inducted into the Arabian Hall of Fame for trainers.  With the expertise of Walter and Brad training Pronto and patiently giving us lessons, we were able to win many championships both amateur and professional on Pronto.  Pronto went on to win reserve western pleasure champion in the 1984 Region Nine Championship show.

In 1980 we attended a Chango Arabian sale and purchased Donna Elkhanna (Talisman NA x Donna Ferzuze).  In 1984 we attended another Chango sale and purchased Donna Rosheba (Don Fersheba x Ronava) and Donna Ronava (Don Fersheba x Ronava).  Some years later Mr. Donoghue invited us to come to his farm and take Donna Gazelle (Don Fersheba x Al Marah Gazelle) home with us.  These became our foundation mares.  Our goal was to breed our Don Fersheba daughters and granddaughters to our Beau Ibn Hanrah son in order to carry on the Donoghue bloodline.

To the best of our knowledge, we are the only farm in the United States carrying on the Donoghue bloodline.  We still have a few pure Donoghue horses, however, because with time the Donoghue bloodline is becoming more defused, we were extremely fortunate to add to our breeding program well-bred individuals featuring classic proven blood such as Azraff, Bask, Abu Farwa, Royal Vanity, as well as very rare Davenport, such as Mr. Donoghue favored, plus, almost all of the old Donoghue greats from the original farm.  Our new horses are treasures due to their rare, “antique” pedigrees.

It is our goal to continue breeding show quality Arabians that can be taken home and ridden and enjoyed by everyone in the family.
